Chanel’s relaxed, free-fitting take on 50s style soon became the norm. An ex-assistant to Pierre Balmain, Lagerfeld was working with both Fendi and Chloé as well as making plans to launch his own label when he began working for Chanel. German designer Karl Lagerfeld had enough on his plate when he took on the role of creative director of Chanel in 1983.
